I was finally able to get on the track: the infamous Road America. It is not the same as on the Xbox using a controller. A steering wheel, pedals, and shifter may get me a better simulation, but why not just spend the money on real track time and real car parts?
The Track Days event for novices was an amazing experience and I recommend it to anyone interested in driving their car on an actual track.
What to Expect
It's hard to know what to expect when I've never been to a track like Road America. I've been to drag strips, but that's easy.
TIP: Sign up for Track Days as early as possible! I was put on a waitlist and, luckily for me, a slot opened up a couple days before the actual Track Days event. Track Days are in the middle of the week so us mere mortals need to take a vacation day from work.
TIP: You need a Snell Association-approved helmet (https://smf.org/faq) that is not expired. You can rent at the track or bring your own; I bought a helmet so it would force me to track the car. I went into a local race parts store so I can try it on before buying. Just like shoes and clothing, everyone's head is shaped differently and the fit varies amongst brands.
TIP: Sign the SpeedWaiver and have it ready at registration booth (can show on phone)
The Schedule
The mandatory drivers meeting is at 745AM. Arriving early has advantages that include:
All drivers and crew must check-in at registration and get wristbands
Choice of parking spot/Setting up tent & chairs
Car prep such as apply number stickers to car, removing tools, mounting cameras, gas, tire pressures, etc.
The novice class is immediately after the drivers meeting
The day before the event, the schedule and any special considerations are emailed to you.
